In his paper for The Washington Law Review, Associate Professor of Law Harry Surden said this about overfitting: “The general idea is that it is undesirable for a machine learning algorithm to detect patterns in the [data] that are so finely tuned to the idiosyncrasies or biases . . . that they are not predictive of future, novel scenarios.”

In other words, machine learning is limited to the mathematics of algorithms. A human reviewing the same data set may make inferences, observations, an intuition-based reflections that are beyond the capabilities of machine learning. This is especially true in situations that might be thought of as outliers.

Even with the advantage of improved efficiency, care needs to be taken to avoid overfitting.

“. . . while we don’t see AI eliminating lawyer jobs, AI will fundamentally change what lawyers do and how they do it, in much the same way Westlaw and Lexis changed the way (and speed at which) traditional legal research was conducted.” – Above the Law

Unless you’re a car aficionado or a history buff, you may not know the name Nils Bohlin. Given what he did, it’s amazing he isn’t better known. Believe it or not, you’ve likely used his invention multiple times in the last 24 hours. In fact, he may have even saved your life.

The three-point game-changer.

By the 1950s, automakers had already recognized the need to include safety equipment in cars. While race car drivers and pilots wore harness-style restraints, production model cars came with simple “two-point” seat belts that only ran across your lap. Sometimes two-point belts provided safety. Sometimes they made injuries sustained during wrecks worse.

Nils Bohlin was an engineer at Volvo. The potential problems of the two-point seat belt weighed on him, so he created a better version. Bohlin’s version crossed over a passenger’s lap and chest, holding their entire body securely. The design (referred to as the three-point seat belt) was so good that it’s still in use today.

And here’s where the story takes an even more remarkable turn. Recognizing the potential to save lives, Bohlin and Volvo made the historic decision to release the patent for the three-point seat belt, making it freely available to everyone in the world. In doing so, millions of lives have been saved.

The Data Capture Revolution

December 1, 1913. That was the day Henry Ford introduced the world to the concept of the assembly line.

Ford was an innovative thinker committed to efficiency. He spent years tinkering with various ways to speed up the process of building a car without sacrificing quality. At one point, workers laid out all the parts for the Model N (the predecessor to the famed Model T) along the floor. They then pulled the car from one end of the work floor to the other, adding parts as they went. It made production faster, but he wasn’t satisfied.

In the end, his quest for streamlining paid off. Prior to the assembly line, it took skilled workers a full 12 hours to build a car. With the assembly line, Ford was able to reduce that time to 2.5 hours. It transformed the automotive industry.
